A contentious land dispute has erupted in Olorunda village, Abeokuta North Local Government, Ogun State, pitting the town’s s four communities— Ilogun Orile, Keesan Orile, Tibo, and Olorunda— against the Abeokuta North Local Government and the king, the Orunda of Olorunda, Oba Phillips Segun Ogunshola.
The residents and indigenes of Olorunda village have alleged during a protest on Wednesday that the Abeokuta North Local Government issued an authorization letter to the king, allowing him to commence work on the disputed land despite the case still being in court.
In response to the perceived injustice, the residents and indigenes of four communities staged a peaceful demonstration in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Led by the Akogun of Keesan Orile, High Chief Akinbode Abegunrin, the protesters demanded that the Abeokuta North Local Government instruct the king to withdraw from the land immediately.
The protesters claimed that the court had already granted them a favorable judgment on the land. However, the Coronet King, Oba Philips Segun Ogunshola, allegedly received a letter of authority from the Abeokuta North Local Government to work on the land, which he is purportedly doing.
The communities demanded that the Abeokuta North Local Government take immediate action to stop the coronet king from working on the land. They are also submitted the court judgment to the local government as evidence
Addressing the protesters alongside other senior officers of the LG, on behalf of the Chairman, Hon. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, Secretary to the Council, Engr. Mutiat Agbaje, assured them that the local government did not issue any letter of authority to work on the land. She added that all their grievances would be passed to the Chairman of the Local Government. She promised that the local government chairman would look into the matter and take immediate action.
Engr. Agbaje also assured the protesters that the coronet king, residents and indigenes of communities would be contacted again for dialogue to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, a letter sighted by our reporter, dated June 13, 2023, addressed to the Coronet King, Oba Philip Segun Ogunshola, with reference number ANLG4/126A and the heading “Renovation of Olorunda Market,” was signed by the Head of the Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mrs. Kikelomo M. Ajayi, on behalf of the Executive Chairman.
