A Lagos State High Court has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwola and the sexual assault of two other women.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment, convicting Ominikoron on multiple charges, including murder, rape, and sexual assault.
The court found overwhelming evidence against Ominikoron, including CCTV footage, call logs, and medical examination reports, linking him to the crimes.
The prosecution presented detailed testimonies and medical reports showing that Ominikoron had sexually assaulted a medical doctor, Dr. Anosike Victoria, and raped another victim, Maryland Ojiezelu, under similar circumstances.
Bamise’s murder sparked widespread outrage and protests, raising concerns over the safety of public transportation in Lagos.
The court held that Ominikoron took advantage of his position as a BRT driver to prey on unsuspecting female passengers. Justice Sonaike stated that the evidence presented was “credible, consistent, and compelling.”
