Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced plans to build a massive farmers’ market in multiple locations across the state.
The governor made this known during an on-the-spot assessment of work done on the farmers’ market located in Asero, Abeokuta. According to Abiodun, the plan is to spread the farmers’ markets in several locations, bringing farmers straight to the locations.
The governor revealed that the Asero market will be one of the smallest in the state, with plans to build a larger, more massive market, similar to the largest farmers’ market in Europe, which he visited in France.
The massive market will be located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, although the exact location is yet to be determined.
Abiodun stated that Ogun State is the first state in the country to have an Ogun State Farmers’ Management Information System, which provides detailed information about farmers in the state.
He assured that his administration is ready to continue supporting farmers with land preparation, provision of pesticides, and fertilizers.
The governor frowned at the activities of middlemen, blaming them for the rise in prices of goods, rather than the removal of subsidy on fuel. He commended the efforts of farmers at the market, who have been operating for over a decade.
Farmers at the market, including Mrs. Soleye Sherifat, Mr. Oladunni Solomon, and Mrs. Akinbobola Oluwatobi, praised Governor Abiodun for the intervention, saying it would improve their economic base.
