The Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) Igbesa, Rector, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, has voiced his opposition to upgrading polytechnics in Nigeria to universities.
While speaking today at a press conference ahead of the institution’s convocation ceremony, Dr. Oluseye explained the need to enhance the quality of polytechnic education instead of pursuing university status.
The Rector also appealed to the federal government to permit polytechnics across Nigeria to offer master’s and PhD programs, just like universities.
Dr. Oluseye revealed that, by doing that, it would elevate the status of polytechnic education and provide more opportunities for students.
He said by doing so, polytechnics can produce highly skilled graduates who can compete with their university counterparts.
The Rector also hinted on the importance of prioritizing technical education in Nigeria, saying that technical education should not be demeaned, as it plays a vital role in driving economic growth and development.
