A 33-year-old man, Sunday Echege, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for severing his wife’s left wrist over alleged infidelity. The incident occurred in Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement, Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, Echege was arrested on Sunday with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community. The machete used in committing the crime was also recovered from the suspect.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Echege confessed to the crime, claiming he acted out of suspicion that his wife, Chinonso Echege, was involved in extramarital affairs. The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect.
Uzuegbu also urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts. This incident highlights the importance of addressing marital disputes in a peaceful and constructive manner.
The case is currently under investigation, and the suspect will face prosecution upon its completion. The incident has sparked concern about the need for couples to manage conflicts in a healthy and non-violent way .
