Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has received commendations for his efforts in promoting reading culture among youths in the state. The National Librarian and CEO of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Veronica, praised Abiodun for approving and releasing land for the National Library Board Complex, which had been pending for 30 years [1).
Prof. Veronica, represented by Dr. Abosede Sangosanya, described the governor’s gesture as “lifesaving” during the public presentation and distribution of books, as well as the formal launch of the Gateway Readers Club in flagship secondary schools. She emphasized reading’s role in shaping young minds and empowering individuals to unlock future opportunities.
The Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, represented by Mr. Jola Oyeneye, reiterated the government’s commitment to providing students with necessary resources and support to optimize reading benefits. Onasanya encouraged students to take full advantage of the initiative, reading widely and critically to broaden their horizons.
The literary materials distributed include reference materials, charts, maps, biographies, fiction, and non-fiction aimed at inspiring, educating, and entertaining young minds. Onasanya stressed the importance of engaging students in extracurricular activities to prevent deviant behavior.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, highlighted reading’s role in promoting literacy, critical thinking, and literary engagement. He lauded Governor Abiodun’s commitment to ensuring well-resourced libraries in schools.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, emphasized the importance of reading skills in students’ foundational learning. She urged parents and stakeholders to prioritize reading to improve intelligence quotient.
Executive Director of the Ogun State Library Board, Mr. Vincent Giwa, acknowledged the administration’s dedication to providing quality educational resources and equipping schools with relevant materials.
Chairman of the Ogun State Library Board, Prof. Victor Awonusi, applauded the Commissioner’s passion for book reading and education, as well as efforts to resuscitate the library board. He commended Dr. Ronke Soyombo’s work in the secondary school system.
Students from African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating that the experience encouraged them to dedicate more time to reading.
This initiative aligns with Ogun State’s focus on education and human development, aiming to reposition the sector to world standards.
