The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to review his economic policies to provide relief for Nigerians. The call was made by the NANS clerk of the Senate, Abdulyekinn Odunayo, in a statement released in Abeokuta on Saturday.
According to Odunayo, the current economic hardship is making life difficult for many Nigerians. He lamented that the economic hardship has forced Nigerians to endure poverty and hunger. The statement added that the Tinubu-led government’s elimination of fuel subsidies and floating of the national currency has worsened the economic situation.
Odunayo acknowledged that some students have benefited from the student loan programme implemented by Tinubu’s administration. However, he called for a complete economic reform to ensure that Nigerians experience the good governance promised by the President.
The NANS clerk of the Senate stated that there is an urgent need for the administration to put measures in place to address hunger, poverty, and impoverishment. He noted that Nigerians are groaning under the heavy burden of the present economic situation.
Odunayo described the removal of fuel subsidies and floating of the naira as “dual swords of Damocles” that have stabbed Nigerians in their hearts. He added that many families can no longer feed even once a day due to the economic hardship.
The free fall of the naira against the dollar and other international currencies has capped the sufferings of Nigerians, according to Odunayo. He emphasized that things need to improve as many Nigerians are finding it difficult to survive.
The call by NANS is not an isolated one, as other groups have also urged the President to review his economic policies. The PDP Governors Forum has also tasked President Tinubu to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies to address the welfare and economic well-being of Nigerians ¹.
