A 41-year-old man, Enitan Awoyemi, has been arrested by the Ogun Amotekun Corps for allegedly staging his own kidnapping to evade financial obligations. Awoyemi, a resident of Irolu-Remo in Remo North Local Government Area, accumulated debts totaling one million naira from gambling in a lotto game [1).
According to Brig. Gen. Alade Adedigba, Amotekun Corps Commandant, Awoyemi’s wife, Tope, reported receiving a phone call from her husband claiming he had been kidnapped and demanding a five million naira ransom.
Investigations revealed Awoyemi had previously won six million naira from the same game, purchasing a Toyota Corolla Sport car and Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. Faced with repayment difficulties, he fabricated the kidnapping scenario.
Collaborative efforts with the Vigilantes Group of Nigeria and community stakeholders led to Awoyemi’s arrest at Irolu okada park on November 13, 2024.
Operatives detected a strong insecticide smell, suggesting an attempted suicide. Awoyemi was rushed to Rufina Private Hospital in Iperu for medical attention.
Upon discharge, Awoyemi will face further proceedings at Ilisan Police Station. Commandant Adedigba commended community cooperation, emphasizing vigilance and reporting suspicious activities.
