A devastating accident occurred in Utu Etim Ekpo, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, claiming three lives, including a lawyer. Multiple shops were destroyed when an articulated flour-laden vehicle lost control.
According to eyewitness Gabriel Akpan, the incident happened around 8 pm Monday. The truck, fleeing Nigerian Army personnel at a roadblock, descended a slope, veering into makeshift shops.
“The driver refused to stop, prompting soldiers to chase him,” Akpan explained. “Losing control, the truck crashed into shops near the motor park.”
Motorcyclist Eno Umanah described the horrific scene: “The driver veered off, killing unsuspecting victims instantly.”
Resident Akaninyene Umanah lamented, “Over 70 lives, including 40 church worshippers, have been lost on this road.” He advocated removing or reconstructing the hazardous roundabout.
Another local resident emphasized the roundabout’s dangers: “Approaching from the Stadium, it’s extremely risky due to the steep slope.”
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Relations Officer John James promised updates upon investigating.
