The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State Branch, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for the recent wage increase extended to all categories of its members. In a letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude,” the Union praised the governor’s kindness and consideration towards state retirees [1).
The state government began paying the N20,000 wage increase in October 2024, marking the first such increase in 16 years. The Union noted that this gesture, along with prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions, steady release of accrued gratuities, and financial support to offset the effects of fuel subsidy removal, demonstrates the governor’s commitment to pensioners’ welfare.
Comrade Waidi Oloyede, State Chairman, Comrade Bola Lawal, Secretary, and Comrade O. Ogabi, State Treasurer, signed the letter, highlighting the governor’s “sincerity of purpose, love, friendliness, and Godliness” towards elderly pensioners.
The Union acknowledged the governor’s efforts to improve pensioners’ lives, citing regular payment schedules that enable pensioners to plan for essential medications and healthcare.
However, the Union respectfully requested the governor’s consideration of a consequential review of pensions for long-standing retirees. This adjustment would align with the Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions for those who retired before the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2019.
Governor Abiodun’s administration has previously demonstrated support for pensioners, including the release of N5.3 billion in gratuities owed by previous administrations ¹. The Union expressed appreciation for these efforts and pledged continued support for the governor’s leadership.
