The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its support for Adegboyega Oyetola, the former Osun Governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, to lead the party in the 2026 gubernatorial election.
Sunday Akere, the former Osun Commissioner for Information and Strategy, made this declaration, stating that Oyetola has the first right of refusal to contest in the next election.
Akere attributed the APC’s loss in the 2022 governorship election to manipulations by powerful forces and internal sabotage aimed at preventing Oyetola’s victory and, by extension, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential ambitions.
He described Oyetola as a man of integrity, honesty, and sociopolitical sagacity, whose impacts on the state cannot be overstated.
The former Information Commissioner emphasized the party’s resilience and determination to reclaim power in 2026.
He criticized Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration for failing to fulfill electoral promises, particularly clearing backlog salary and pension arrears.
Akere noted that the APC would capitalize on the current government’s shortcomings to campaign and win the next gubernatorial election.
He berated Governor Adeleke’s performance, citing the state’s receipt of billions of naira monthly with little to show for it.
“The current government has failed woefully, and we will leave no stone unturned to take maximum advantage of their woes,” Akere stated.
The former Osun Commissioner also highlighted the APC’s readiness to square up with the ruling PDP in the next election.
Akere’s assertions come as the APC prepares to reclaim power in Osun State, with Oyetola’s potential candidacy seen as a significant factor in the party’s chances.
The 2026 Osun gubernatorial election is expected to be highly contested, with the APC and PDP already gearing up for the battle ahead.
