A Nigerian court has adjourned the trial of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, to October 25 after he was deemed too ill to attend court.
Gambaryan, who has been detained since February 2024, faces money laundering charges alongside Binance Ltd. His absence from court on Friday sparked concerns, prompting Justice Emeka Nwite to inquire about his whereabouts.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho, expressed surprise at Gambaryan’s absence and requested a brief adjournment to investigate. Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, expressed unawareness of the reason behind his client’s absence.
Upon reconvening, the court learned that Gambaryan was critically ill and unable to attend the trial. The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) confirmed his illness.
Mordi requested an adjournment to allow for a report on Gambaryan’s health status. The EFCC did not oppose the request, citing concerns about Gambaryan’s health.
Justice Nwite adjourned the trial until October 25 for a report on Gambaryan’s health. Gambaryan’s family has raised concerns about his deteriorating health.
Gambaryan was detained on February 26, 2024. His family and lawyers have alleged inhumane treatment.
The EFCC had previously stated that Gambaryan’s health issues were not as severe as reported.
Gambaryan’s trial is part of a broader investigation into alleged money laundering.
The adjournment highlights concerns about Gambaryan’s health and the need for medical attention.
The trial will resume on October 25.
