A devastating flood has ravaged Kogi State, Nigeria, submerging over 200 communities and displacing nearly two million people.
According to Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the situation is dire and has become overwhelming.
“The flood disaster here is devastating, and over 200 communities have already been submerged, with close to two million people displaced,” Fanwo stated.
Nine out of the 21 Local Government Areas in the state have been affected, with schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure completely destroyed.
Fanwo described the scene as distressing, particularly for the elderly and children. “Seeing the aged and little children in this kind of distress is a horrible sight.”
The state government has opened 68 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, but they are struggling to accommodate the massive population.
The Kogi State government is calling for immediate intervention from the Nigerian government and international donor agencies to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.
Commissioner Fanwo emphasized that the National Emergency Management Agency cannot afford to wait any longer, urging swift action to address the catastrophic situation.
