The House of Representatives has advanced a bill proposing the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, the bill had its first reading on Thursday.
The proposed university aims to promote Nigerian languages and cultural studies, providing equal educational opportunities in Nigerian languages. It will offer diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate programs designed to develop skills in language and cultural fields.
The institution will focus on developing practical skills in Nigerian languages, contributing to the growth of education in Nigeria. It will also facilitate postgraduate training, research, and innovation, leveraging Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources.
The university will collaborate with other national institutions engaged in language and cultural development, promoting in-service training and educational outreach. This move is expected to preserve Nigeria’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage.
According to the bill, President Bola Tinubu will serve as the university’s visitor, conducting evaluations at least once every five years. The President will also have authority to remove council members, excluding the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, based on misconduct or inability to perform duties.
The bill is scheduled for a second reading in the coming weeks, followed by a public hearing to gather input from relevant stakeholders. This provides an opportunity for the public to contribute to the development of the proposed university.
